Good day, my dear reader. Let me ask you about the same service: look carefully at the top photo. What do you think, who is this man standing in the old, not in size of big, pants, felling jumper and dirty shoes?
In such clothes, we can walk in such clothes during autumn weather, plumbing, locksmith, road workers … Yes, I myself do not look better when I fill the concrete or doing something in the yard.
You can imagine what the world-famous sculptor looks like, earning a huge amount of money, which can put a sculpture at his own sculpture on New York Street, and the next day to go to the exhibition in China and get the Grand Prix there. Surely it will be a sort of sophisticated intelligent type, in a piece, in glasses and so on …
Meanwhile, the person in the photo, so similar to plumbing, man is a legend. As always, in their articles, I will not talk about his works and work, I will tell about the man.
In the world of modern art, he reached such heights and recognition that he just put a bolt for all conventions.
Come to the exhibition in old clothes?
He does it constantly!
Do not come to present the award at all?
And all this one person, Steve Tobin, who became famous long before entering the world of art. But he became a legend thanks to one very important ability:
Get out of time!
Steve was born in 1957 in the United States in the city of Philadelphia (Pennsylvania). Since childhood, he was an outstanding mathematician. All teachers and mentors in the university told about the brilliant scientific future for a young man.
They were right about the future, but mistaken in the fact that it is associated with science. One day, after a brilliant defense of the thesis and publication of a special important article, he came to his colleagues and stated:
He decided to devote himself to art. At first he was engaged in the manufacture of very expensive handmade tables from the valuable tree species. Already at the first contest, his table ranked first. On the third year, his tables were bought by collectors of 30 thousand dollars apiece. Today, by the way, the price of his tables reaches 120 — 160 thousand dollars.
What do you think he did for the fourth year?
Right! He left.
The workshop was sold, it still works and brings good profits.
After that, he took up glass.
The first thing Steve went to the tank polygon, increased armored lookups from old tanks and … did an Eskimo needle from them. The work was so fresh and Nova, that he again took himself the first prize.
After that, he decided to make waterfalls from the glass, though he did not blow his sculptures. He pulled out the finest glass threads, which then glued into separate waves and whole cascades of water.
For each such waterfall ran away from 2 to 4 million glass filaments. Height they were from 3 to 12 meters.
His «glass windows» was so hit the imagination that in 1993 Steve invites the Finnish government to decorate the main entrance to the Museum of Contemporary Art. He worked on the fountain for more than a year. Mahina 23 meters high consisted of 8 million glass yarns.
Literally the day after the opening of the museum, the Chinese turned to Steve with a request to build an even greater waterfall in Shanghai. What Steve Tobin answered:
I can’t build an even greater waterfall, it will be boring. Therefore … I’m leaving. Thanks to all.
After that, he took up bronze (3 years), clay (4 years), roots of trees, fracthers and even large blocks of ice. Everything, for whatever it fell, absolutely all work was sold to collectors for big money.
Every time he broke into some scope of art, he took prizes, won in contests, sold sculptures to collectors, after which he spoke his corona phrase:
His works were instantly rushed at times, and collectors nervously rubbed their hands in anticipation of profits from the sale of rarities …
Yes, by the way, now Steve Tobin is engaged in steel. True, I’m afraid, soon he will again give his crown phrase — 48 statues from steel has already been sold. The latter, about which I know, is in Shanghai. He still instilled the Chinese.
